Ever since French
Chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse plunged his scorched arm into
a vat of lavender essential oil in 1928, modern aromatherapy
has burgeoned into a science and art unto itself. After the
"accident" in his lab, he became fascinated with
how the lavender was able to help heal his burn and prevent
scarring.
Since ancient times, civilizations including
the Romans and Egyptians have used plants in everything from
cooking, bathing and perfumery to medicinal and healing purposes.
Aromatherapy is the practice of using the
essential oils -- distilled from the leaves, stems, flowers
or bark of plants -- to enhance physical and mental well-being.
Essential oils work therapeutically as the body absorbs them
through the skin and inhalation.
